Verity One Oyster Project:
Saving Palau’s Oceans

Partnering with Palau to Clean Water, Restore Reefs, and Create Jobs

The Verity One Oyster Project uses native Palauan oysters to clean the ocean water. Each oyster can suck up to 130 gallons of water every day, pulling out dirt like nitrogen, phosphorus, and tiny plastics. This makes the water clear and helps coral reefs grow strong and healthy again.

Healthy reefs bring back fish, baby fish (called fry), and shellfish, making the ocean full of life. Oyster reefs also act like natural walls, protecting Palau’s beaches from storms and waves that wash away the land. Because of this, Palau can safely reopen over 80% of its protected ocean areas for fishing and gathering food, while still keeping nature safe for future generations.

For example, in places like the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, cleaner water means more colorful corals and more fish for families to catch. This helps the ocean stay balanced and beautiful.

Palauan oysters are a healthy food that grows right here. Eating them reduces the need to buy food from other countries, saving money and making sure families have enough to eat. The project starts a local oyster farming business where people grow and harvest oysters.

This creates jobs for growing oysters, taking care of reefs, checking water quality, and showing eco-tourists Palau’s amazing oceans. These jobs help women and young people learn new skills, earn money, and support their families. For instance, a fisher can become an oyster farmer and guide visitors, turning a small effort into a big opportunity.

The Oyster Project respects Palau’s way of life, where people work together and care for the land and sea for their children and grandchildren. By involving local communities in growing oysters and caring for reefs, the project keeps these traditions alive.

It gives fishers, women’s groups, and youth a chance to lead, creating jobs and making sure everyone has food. Cleaner waters and thriving reefs bring back Palau’s peaceful beauty, attracting visitors who want to see its clear oceans and colorful marine life, boosting the local economy with eco-tourism.

The Oyster Project uses simple tools to show how much oysters clean the water. Small devices (IoT sensors) and smart computers (AI) check the water, and the results turn into digital “Nutrient Credits” on a safe online system (blockchain). These credits can be sold to people and companies worldwide who want to help clean oceans, bringing money to Palau for schools, healthcare, and more.

This makes Palau a leader for other islands and coastal places, showing how to clean water, create jobs, and protect nature while earning money. It supports big goals like:

  • The Paris Agreement to fight climate change
  • The UN Decade of Ocean Science to keep oceans healthy
  • The High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, where Palau has a voice

Palau’s project can teach the world how to save oceans and build a better future for everyone.

The Oyster Project brings Palau’s oceans back to life while helping people and culture. Oysters clean the water, making it clear for corals to grow strong. This creates homes for fish, baby fish (fry), and shellfish, filling the sea with life. It supports reopening over 80% of protected areas for safe fishing and gathering, while keeping the Palau National Marine Sanctuary healthy. Oysters also act like natural shields, stopping storms and waves from washing away beaches, and give baby fish safe places to grow, so there are more fish for families.

Native Palauan oysters are healthy food that grows locally, cutting the need for food from far away and making sure families have enough to eat. The project starts an oyster farming business, with jobs in growing oysters, caring for reefs, checking water, and showing tourists Palau’s beauty. This helps women and youth learn skills, earn money, and support their families. It follows Palau’s way of working together and caring for the next generation, keeping traditions alive.

Cleaner water and thriving reefs bring back Palau’s peaceful, clear oceans, attracting visitors who love nature. This boosts eco-tourism and makes Palau famous as a beautiful, safe marine paradise, bringing more money and pride to the community.
